As Luigi Maria Epicoco writes in the Foreword, Consistentism "arises from a paradox: what has the greatest consistency—the greatest strength, the greatest weight in orienting human life—is not what is present, visible, tangible, but what is absent. Absence is more consistent than presence. What is not yet there, what is awaited or desired, exerts an incomparably greater attraction on human life than what is already possessed. This structure is not a psychological anomaly: it is the most specific trait of the human being, the 'inescapable trace of metaphysics' that the volume's subtitle announces." Man is a being fascinated by the possible, solicited by the possible, motivated by the possible because never satisfied by the real. A sort of horizontal metaphysics, of transcendence through the possible of every reality. History has been and remains the constant manifestation of this intimate contradiction. It is, each time, the pretense of responding with presences of illusory consistency, swept away by that absence which, inexorably recognized, pushes toward change, transformation, rebellion, adaptation—in short, everything that fills this colorful cauldron that is our history. This cauldron, with presences of illusory consistency, temporarily satisfies, convinces in the moment, conforms to the context, but which by its very essence is destined to vanish in favor of the next. Freedom arises from an absence, from the absence of answers from nature to questions that are present within us: in other words, faced with any situation, our behavior is not prescribed, we do not know how or what to respond, and, taking the situation into consideration, we decide, that is, we choose, we act freely, thereby deploying a multifaceted variety of responses precisely because they are not prescribed, that is, not inscribed in the natural system that posed the question(s). If nature had guided human response, it would have imposed a single answer, necessary for the entire species, just as it does for any other organism. The ontological root of freedom, rooted and born within human beings from the imbalance between the presence of excessive potential questions and the poverty of the answers offered by nature and by the human condition itself (even though it is capable of asking those questions!), as soon as it manifests itself externally, as soon as it comes to light, lies before it a boundless field of historical possibilities to be realized, countless micro- and macro-histories, an indefinite, endless series of choices, as many as the infinite quality of the question can produce, in the quantitative finite.
